So this year I moved in with my beautiful girlfriend.
-I quit my pest control job, started graduate school, started delivering pizzas again.
-Grandaddy passed away Easter weekend from cancer.
-Finished up my first semester, witnessed the 100 year flood.
-Went to Cincy with Kristen and stayed in room 1408 and it was creepy, saw an awesome Reds game and went to Ikea.
-Went to Bonnaroo with friends and the best performances I saw were from Kings of Leon, Tenacious D, Circa Survive, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, and Gwar.
-Got married in Vegas on 10/10/10 to Kristen because she makes everyday feel like heaven and its beautiful to find someone to share the world with you. It was the best trip I've ever taken and im glad we had friends there to experience it with us.
-Took a trip to Orlando with Kristen as a kinda honeymoon and we went to Universal (where I didn't have the greatest time thanks to my weak stomach lol) but got to hang with Joey and Robb for a bit before heading home.
-And now the holidays have passed and the new year is closing in and Im thankful for the changes that came into my life this year and the love that has changed my life.
So now I want to do my annual top ten lists.

Module 9
I was curious on finding a tutorial that involves extracting PDF's out of PowerPoint, since every time I try to do this it takes me way longer than it should. So I am going to review 3 results and pick the best one.
1. http://www.go2pdf.com/ppt-to-pdf.html
This was a straightforward numbered tutorial with only 1 visual example. I gave a method that I have not tried before and when I tried it I did not have "Virtual PDF Printer" option but I did have a PDF option in a box below so this tutorial was not accurate for me.

Next was the Microsoft Office tutorial help guide. No visual information but the step by step instructions worked as expected.
This tutorial was on About.com and it is visually the best of the three. There are step by step instructions but there are also 3 visual aids to guide the viewer through the process. This tutorial wins overall.

Slideboom upload
- Which version of the presentation do you think is a more effective teaching tool?
I think the audio enhanced the presentation of the PowerPoint but the visual aspect allows students to come up with their own conclusions.
- Did the images you originally selected convey messages or emotions that text cannot?
The sequence of images I selected for each slide, in my opinion, convey the message of time and give a good visual representation.
- How might students use the SlideBoom tool in their learning experiences?
SlideBoom would allow students to animate their PowerPoints into movies.
- How have these activities changed the way you will use PowerPoint in the future?
I make more video instruction than I do PowerPoint so I don't think it will change my usage because I never got into the habit of strictly using PowerPoints to relay information.
Since SlideBoom doesnt play embedded audio, I converted my presentation to a movie.

Vickie's New Thing #13
Flickr
Flickr is a great picture site. For someone looking for a visual representation of anything you can't really go wrong on this site. It would be great for an Internet scavenger hunt or lessons in photography or geography. An example I might use is find a picture that represent San Francisco, CA and I might come up with something like this picture.
Never rated before because I have used it so many times but after reviewing dozens of Web 2.0 sites the list grows smaller.

Tried out voki, its something fun to play around with. Create a character and record or text audio to it. It creeps me out with it follows the mouse around with its eyes but its an application thats good for a laugh. Students could use this to create something unique and fun to show others.
Amanda's New Thing #10
JamLegend
JamLegend is similar to the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. This app could be something students could get into with popular music as the background and interactivity with the buttons lining up with the notes it could teach younger students about rhythm and have a music lesson be fun and have the ability to compete against other students for high score. Its more game than learning experience but it all depends on how you use the site.
Tabitha's New Thing #9
Game Classroom is a great interactive educational website for younger students. You can search for interactive games or jump right in on the "start playing" tab. I was taken to a Capital Letters game and when I changed the correct letter to a capital I was rewarded with a piece of a puzzle to solve. Great sounds and interactivity.
Britt's new thing #8
So I tried the Spell with flickr http://metaatem.net/words/ and its something really fun to play with. A nice activity for young students or can be incorporated into some graphic design project. The letters vary each time you use it, something random and fun at the same time.

New Thing 7
eyePlorer.com is a graphical knowledge engine which displays related facts about a searched topic. It is an interesting way to search topics much like a wiki but a much more interactive way to view information.
How it works
Step 1: Type in a word in the search bar or just drag in a term already in the circle. For example purposes I draged in iPhone.
Step 2: The result gives a description of the iPhone on the left and even more items to discover in the search circle. Items in the circle can be searched on their own or can be discovered how they relate to the other terms in the circle by double-clicking.
Step 3: You can narrow your search by dragging concepts into the blank search bars.
eyePlorer puts a nice visual touch into searching through wiki's and could be a great alternative to students who learn more from a visual standpoint rather than text based websites.

Visual Thesaurus
Visual Thesaurus is an interactive thesaurus that creates a word grid relating from searched words. It encourages searches and learning helping users to increase language skills.
How it works
Step 1: Type in a word in the LOOK IT UP box. For this example I will type the word "happy".
Step 2: Look at the word map and choose the word you would like to use. I choose the word blissful and it also had an audio clip along with the word just incase I needed help pronouncing it. Definitions are located on the right and and the navigation at the top is fairly straightforward and easy to understand
This is a great way to visually understand word meanings and gives a way to expand a students vocabulary.

Goodbye Granddaddy
In a bout with cancer that has lasted almost 2 years the disease final took him around 1:30 on Good Friday. I got to see him and I held his hand because I didn't really want to say goodbye. He had grown weaker and weaker over the past year but I am grateful to have known him my whole life and I am glad he does not have to suffer anymore. He couldn't speak, he was running a 103 degree fever and seemed to be struggling for breath while he slept. I left before he passed but mom called me an hour later to tell me that he had left us. It didn't really hit me until I called into work to see if I had to come in and the last thing my boss said is "I'm sorry for your loss." This struck me as weird because he is new and I haven't met him yet so how can he be sorry? He doesn't even know me yet. But then I realized I did lose something and at that point I realized that he wasn't coming back. Thats when I cried. He taught me how to smile, he made me laugh. I learned about the simple pleasures in life from him and part of him will always live as part of me. So I guess this is my way of saying goodbye. The funeral is tomorrow and I hate funerals. I hope my family can celebrate his life and cherish his 80+ years on this earth.

One Last Thing
This 23 Things program has been a learning process. I was familiar with most of the material because I like to learn and explore new web applications so these assignments were fun for me. I learned about some new applications that I would probably use in the future such as the time-lapse application and zoho writer. Someone encouraged me long ago that if I wanted to have a career involving the internet, I need to discover and learn as much as I can as it becomes available to me. Thanks for turning me on to some websites I may have not discovered otherwise.
Thing 23
* Find an example or attribution that shows the Learning 2.0-23Things for Teachers blog was based on someone else's work and modified from its original. Music has many cases pending copyright infringement but there is a "dj" named Girltalk and he takes popular music from dozens of songs and makes them one entity. Girltalk makes all of his music based on other peoples works and its good. http://www.myspace.com/girltalk
* Now that you know about Creative Commons licensing, how will you use it in the future as a teacher?
I will attempt to explain to my students about Creative Commons and the best ways to go about avoiding copyright infringement like using public domain video, taking their own pictures, collaborating with owners of copyrights and how to ask for permission.

Thing 22
http://www.smodcast.com/
* Which podcast did you listen to?
I listen to smodcast and it is a podcast hosted by film maker Kevin Smith and producer Scott Mosier. I listen to smodcast because Kevin Smith is probably one of the best story tellers in the world today. I just like listening to him talk. The episode I listened to was #107 Thinicism, where he talks about being kicked off a plane for being fat. He also talks person, Natalie, who had a similar experience. WARNING, the podcast is for adult ears so don't listen if you are easily offended.
* Which of the directories did you find the easiest to use?
Podcastdirectory was easy enough to use in looking through.
* Has this Thing inspired you to create a podcast yourself or with your students?
I have no students but I have done a few podcast, but I couldn't do it on a regular basis unless I was getting paid for it.
* Did you find a podcast that you might subscribe to and listen to regularly?
I listen to smodcast regularly and have subscriptions to a few more.

A Day At Bonnaroo
Animoto is a very user friendly and fast video clip website. Its great for turning pictures into videos, I enjoyed using it.

Thing 20
Create a blog post about your experience. What did you like or dislike about the site and why did you choose the video that you did? Can you see any features or components of the site that might be interesting if they were applied to your library website?
YouTube is one of the greatest sites in existance. Anyone can view, post, and share video on the Internet and people can actually become famous by posting their talent (or embarassing moments) but it can be used for Education as well as entertainment. The only thing I dont like about youtube is the advertising that is forced upon the videos.
The video I chose actually teaches you photoshop in an entertaining way.
I think APSU can use youtube to present short instructional videos like how to search library databases.
Thing 19
Are you a member of any online communities?
Are any of these social networks appealing to you?
What did you find that was interesting and that you might use later?
I am a member of the following online communities: Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, Twitter, Last.fm, Blip, stickam, imeem, and maybe a few more I cant remember. I try to join online communities just to explore what is on the Internet.
Are any of these social networks appealing to you?
I have played with last.fm and flixter but none listed really appealed to me.
What did you find that was interesting and that you might use later?
I am a movie buff so I will explore FilmCrave a little more to see if it keeps my interest.
Thing 18
Write a blog post about your experience that addresses these questions. Why is it important that educators know how social networking works? What new insights did you gain about these popular sites? What did you like or dislike about each of the sites you explored? Which site had the most useful features? Can you see a classroom or school application for any of these sites?
It is important that educators know how social networking sites work because networking is just an important aspect of the Internet today. I have been on myspace since it came out in 2003 and it has changed so much over the years. At first it was just about finding people and it quickly developed into the premier music site. I don't use it as often now because of the ads and the overall look and navigation. But I still use it for music related things.
Facebook used to be available to college students as a social networking site and has since expanded and become more cluttered and complicated with games and applications.
I couldn't see facebook or myspace relevant for learning because they both have become to cluttered and distracting. There are other social networking sites that I could see uses in classrooms like LinkedIn or Twitter.
Thing 17
Create a blog post about your experience and thoughts about this tool. Can you see the potential of this tool in the classroom? Or just as an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere? How can teachers take advantage of social bookmarking sites?
I can see the potential for using del.icou.us for some classroom use. It would be a good tool for teachers and students to build tags and sites for research or class use. The sharing aspect of social bookmarking is what makes it such a powerful tool. Teachers and students can move freely among computers and maintain access to their bookmarks. I think this is a great advantage to this site.
Thing 16
- Which start page did you choose? Why did that one appeal to you? Will you make it your permanent home page?
I installed Google Desktop and it instantly had me searching and captivated. I enjoy anything Google because they are proven and reliable. It will be a permanent fixture on my desktop.
- How can the online calendars be useful to you?
Online calenders can keep you organized and access can be granted from any computer and most smart phones. It is a useful tool for anyone who has a loaded schedule or even for remembering birthdays and important dates.
- What about the to-do lists—helpful, too much work…? It was alot of website to explore but it was helpful in finding sites that I may not have stumbled upon otherwise.
- Did you find a tool that has some uses for you at the school or at home? Which tool(s) would you recommend to others? I recommend any google tools only because they are useful and they all sync to each other for easy access.
Thing 15
Create a post in your blog about the experience. How might you use a wiki? What did you find interesting about the wiki concept?
Wiki's can be used as a focal point to collaborate on ideas and topics. I have used wiki's in a few classes and it has been great for group projects and sharing information. The thing I find most interesting about the wiki concept is that practically ANYONE can add their thoughts or findings to a wiki. Five years ago no one knew what wikipedia was and now it is a common household name. Its amazing how some concepts, like the wiki, can change the way the world retrieves and shares information.
Thing 14
A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea.
The mind map software i tried out was Bubbl.us and it is fairly straight forward and easy to use and edit. I wish I had played with this software for a timeline project I did last year, but I will definitely keep it in mind for future use.
A flowchart is a common type of diagram, that represents an algorithm or process, showing the steps as boxes of various kinds, and their order by connecting these with arrows.
I used Gliffy.com to work with the flowchart software. The Gliffy site looks complex but once you get into it the variety and options become important to create both consistency and contrast in creating designs. You can upload your own images or manipulate the images provided to you so the options are limitless when it comes to the look of a chart you are trying to create. There is also an option to share your chart through your blog which is convenient.. I like Gliffy because of the variety and options provided and would use it if I needed to publish any flowchart.
Thing 13
Zoho Writer is a free, collaborative online word processor that rivals Microsoft Word. The interface if very easy to understand and you can basically just jump right in and start typing. Some of the features I like are that it allows you to collaborate with others, exports to Word, PDF, HTML & many other formats, post to blogs, and it's FREE! Everything is here for Zoho Writer to be a great software to take advantage of and its definitely something I will end up using.

I tried out Google Calender and I found it quite easy to use. I can type in my schedule and share it with others. I can check events with my mobile phone and get emails sent to me to remind me of anything I have listed in my calender. Hopefully, I will continue using Google Calender.
The second tool I tried was Google Notebook. It seems it could be useful in some of my research topics for my classes. It looks like a great tool for organizing notes from websites. I added both tools to my Google homepage.

Create a blog post about your experience that answers these questions:
*Which method of finding feeds did you find easiest to use?
*Which was more confusing?
*What kind of useful feeds did you find in your travels?
*Or what kind of unusual ones did you find?
*What other tools or ways did you find to locate newsfeeds?
*Which method of finding feeds did you find easiest to use?
The easiest method was just typing what I was looking for, I typed in a few friends names and added their rss feeds.
*Which Search tool was the easiest for you?
Im a google freak so I liked google blog search
*Which was more confusing?
The syndic8 site is kinda confusing, but I think it is because the web design is so bad.
*What kind of useful feeds did you find in your travels?
I'm a movie buff so I added the slashfilm.com feed to keep me updated on movie related info and I like Wired and ESPN as well.
*Or what kind of unusual ones did you find?
Lolcats 'n' funny pictures of cats, cake wrecks, and Garfield minus Garfield, a blog dedicated solely to Garfield cartoon strips that lack the actual presence of Garfield the cat.
*What other tools or ways did you find to locate newsfeeds?
Most of my searches were through bloglines and google blog search.
Thing 10
- What do you like about RSS and newsreaders?
I like that I can browse through my favorite websites or blogs on one page. It can save me time and I don't have to refresh pages for updates, because the feed does it automatically. Feed also attract interests in search engines as they reach new audiences.
- How do you think you might be able to use this technology in your school or personal life?
I can keep up with my close friends blogs and updates and add teachers blogs or sites and school related sites to stay informed and up to date.
- How can teachers use RSS or take advantage of this new technology?
I find that teachers who blog tend to have better communication overall with their students, whether its a personal blog or school oriented. Teachers could also share their discoveries and knowledge through blogs or personal websites.

Time-lapse Creator - View Time-lapse
I used a time-lapse creator and uploaded some pictures of my niece. I have done time-lapse projects before (in Keynote) but not with uploaded photos but I could see doing a time-lapse project if a assignment called for one but I would like to focus on one still object and the world moving around it. Sharing photos online doesnt bother me but im not the type of person who posts every photo I take online. I only upload photos online when the mood hits me or I want other people to see.

Explore any site from the Web 2.0 awards list, play with it and write a post about your findings.
The site I like in the music category is Pandora.com
It is EXTREMELY easy to set up, just type in an artist you want to listen to and it starts to play a setlist immediately. You can skip a few songs, dislike songs and bands, and it takes aspects of the songs you do like as a recommendation for future music. Depending on your mood you can set up multiple set lists and even listen to your friends set lists through email, twitter, or facebook. Another great feature is the phone application so you can listen to your stations on the go or in your car. The only detractor of this site is the brief 30 commercials you get every 4 to 6 songs.

Another great feature is the phone application so you can listen to your stations on the go or in your car. The only detractor of this site is the brief 30 commercials you get every 4 to 6 songs.
Thing 5
The Web is no longer just a vessel of information to filter through, it is now something that we interact with on a daily basis. Web 2.0 has raised the bar with interactivity on the Internet. Blogs, RSS feeds, Podcasts, Online Classes, Social Networking are just a few of the technologies that have reached anyone with computer access. Over the last 10 years interaction through the Internet has compelled technology to enter the education world and with limited class space and unlimitless potential, online education has quickly put itself in the spotlight of the future. As long as teachers continue to learn and practice good techniques and organizational skills, students can gain a quality education without stepping foot inside a classroom.
7 1/2 Habits
7 1/2 Habits from easiest to hardest
1.) Play! - This is by far the easiest because I am curious about alot of things and how they work, I don't read as much as I should but I do like to experiment and learn.
2.) Use technology to your advantage - I strictly believe in the saying "Work smarter, not harder." If there are tools, websites, books, gadgets, or applications that I have or can gain access to and will make my life easier or save time, I will attempt to do so.
3.) Create your own learning toolbox - Over the past few years I have been acquiring books, technology, friends, mentors, and information that all play some part in my career goals, whether its a book on Dreamweaver or friends who can help me through networking.
4.) View problems as challenges - I am a person who tackles problem solving so this is nothing new to me.
5.) Teach/mentor others - I was doing this the last few semesters in school helping anyone who asked for my help. I liked doing it so much I want an Education Masters. HA.
6.) Begin with the end in mind - Some goals of mine I have yet to achieve, I think it is important to set smaller goals that lead ultimately to what you want.
7.) Accept responsibility for your own learning - I started APSU right out of high school, kept my head above water for 2 years and dropped out due to money problems. Looking back I should have studied harder and toughed out the money problems but hindsight is 20/20. But I will say that coming back to school 10 years later has changed my focus, where at 18 everything was so new and I wasn't really focused on my grades, now learning has come much easier and faster for me.
7 1/2.) Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner - Sometimes I doubt myself when some assignments or classes can get really out of hand or overwhelming and I always feel like I should have done more or that I have forgotten something but throughout my education I have succeeded. But maybe everyone feels that way as a student.

How can a leader of instructional technology use a blog?
Well, my answer for this question is what first comes to mind.
A leader of instructional technology can relay their thoughts, experiences, and opinions through a blog and can answer real questions from those who are eager to learn from someone in that position. Blogs can be separated into different categories a can be updated within seconds. And more importantly a leader of instructional technology can relay their thoughts of what "to do" and what "not to do" in their particular field of expertise.

New Year, New Life
After 6 months of unemployment and a 5 month stint as a pest control tech 2010 has reshaped my life.
- I have an awesome girlfriend who I am madly in love with.
- I moved out of my house and moved in with my girlfriend.
- Im still rerouting all my mail...which sucks.
- I got accepted to the Graduate Assistant Program
- I got a job in the Distance Education Department.
- I quit my pest control job.
- I got a job delivering pizza...again
My stint in the real world was brief and uneventful and the job market is terrible but I am glad I am on track to getting my Master's...its one more step to having people calling me Doctor.
